1. Morris as a representation of black men in apartheid South Africa. He is a symbol for:

iii) the casualties of black miners under apartheid:
- not allowed to form unions
- no pension for contract workers
- no compensation
- no regular, monthly income.
2. The significance of Morris’ words:
i) ‘You are walking on stolen legs’:
- Being without legs makes him less of a man.
- He is an easy prey to criminals like Tsotsi as he cannot defend himself.
- The wealth of Johannesburg is built on the sacrifices of the miners.
